Apple has announced changes to its App Store age ratings in Australia and France, aiming to enhance user safety, particularly for children. These adjustments reflect local regulations and are part of Apple’s ongoing commitment to creating a safe digital environment.
New Regional Age Ratings
The updated age ratings will appear alongside Apple’s global age ratings, requiring no action from developers. Currently, apps with “Infrequent or mild simulated gambling” are rated 12+, while those with direct gambling or “Frequent or intense simulated gambling” receive a 17+ rating on the App Store globally.
However, the new policy in Australia mandates that any app featuring simulated gambling will now have an R18+ regional age rating in addition to the global rating. Similarly, in France, apps with a 17+ Apple global age rating will also display an 18+ regional age rating.
Responding to New Guidelines
This policy shift follows new Australian classification guidelines for video games with gambling-like content, effective from September 22, 2024. The Australian Government introduced these rules in response to concerns about the potential impact of gambling-like mechanics on problem gambling, particularly among younger audiences.
Under the new guidelines, games offering paid loot boxes or chance-based in-game purchases will receive a minimum classification of M (Mature), advising against play by users under 15. Apps featuring simulated gambling will now be rated R 18+, limiting purchases to adults.
Emphasis on User Safety
With these updates, Apple continues to prioritize user safety and aligns its practices with regional regulatory standards. This initiative reflects a broader industry effort to address concerns about gambling elements in digital content and their influence on young users.
